About NASA Space Apps Challenge Waterloo
Bringing the world’s largest annual global hackathon to Waterloo
On October 4–5, 2025, this two-day hackathon will bring together a diverse community of technologists, scientists, engineers, designers, and storytellers in the Waterloo region to build innovative projects and prototypes that address real-world problems using NASA’s open data.
Local participants will join thousands of people worldwide to tackle a series of themed challenges developed by NASA Subject Matter Experts, spanning topics such as space exploration, Earth science, climate, arts, software, games, hardware, and more. These challenges are designed to be accessible to all backgrounds and to spark creativity, problem-solving, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
This event offers the community a unique opportunity to develop valuable skills in design thinking, teamwork, coding, and science communication, while expanding networks and fostering long-lasting connections across disciplines and related industries.

Collaborations
The NASA Space Apps Waterloo team is on the lookout for clubs and organizations interested in collaborating with us!
Possible collaboration opportunities include the following:
- Host workshops for hackathon attendees during the event or in the months leading up to it. Workshop ideas could range from data science tutorials and how to nail hackathon pitches, to introductory programming and more! We're open to working with your club’s area of expertise and would love to create something valuable for attendees.
- Host collaborative events and games during the hackathon. Does your club know how to have a good time? Help attendees unwind and de-stress by hosting a fun, engaging activity during the hackathon. Ideas could include karaoke sessions, arts and crafts breaks, outdoor games, and more—we’re excited to work with your club to bring some light-hearted energy to the weekend!
Promotions
There are also plenty of ways to support this event beyond monetary contributions. One of the most impactful is helping us spread the word! As a student-led hackathon, we greatly appreciate any support in sharing our posts on social media or through other channels.
