Participate in workshops designed to support you through the milestones of your degree. 

We know that graduate students often feel that there are things they should know more about, may have missed, or need more guidance for, especially around their program's academic milestones or expectations. Not only will GRADnavigate workshops help answer these questions, but they will also help you build community with your peers and introduce you to University staff who are here to support your graduate student experience.

What is GRADnavigate?

GRADnavigate is a series of workshops designed to answer questions about graduate school and help you thrive in your degree. We'll cover important topics like:

  • Understanding comprehensive exams
  • Interdisciplinary research
  • Navigating supervisory relationships
  • And more!

Academic milestones & degree planning

  • Planning Your Degree (DYL for Master's Students): Review your academic milestones, explore potential career paths, and consider both academic and non-academic opportunities to tailor your master's experience to your unique goals.
  • Planning Your Degree (DYL For Doctoral Students): Review your academic milestones, consider where your PhD could take you, and think about academic and non-academic opportunities available to you to design your PhD experience so that it's uniquely tailored to you.  
  • Demystifying Comprehensive and Qualifying Exams: Learn about what the comprehensive/qualifying exam experience involves, how to plan for it, and what questions to ask your supervisor as you learn more about this important milestone.
  • How to Postdoc 101 - A Panel Discussion on the Postdoc Experience: Learn about postdoctoral positions, what they entail, and how to know if it's the right next step for you.

  • Supervisory Relationships: Learn about supervisor-student relationships, expectations, and how to navigate this relationship to create a collaborative and positive graduate experience.
  • Grad Student Self-Advocacy - Navigating Challenges with Confidence: Explore approaches you can use to navigate a variety of potentially challenging situations. The tips and skills discussed can be useful in engaging with faculty, peers, supervisors, and other members of the academic community.

  • The Art Of Saying ‘No’ - Managing Expectations in Graduate School: Explore decision-making strategies for deciding when to say "yes" and when to say "no", as well as suggestions and tips for how to convey your decision.
  • Time Management Mastery in Grad School: Learn about the various approaches to coordinating your busy graduate schedule, establishing priorities, and maximizing the time you have available. 
  • Knock, Knock! Making the Most of Opportunities in Graduate School: Explore how you can maximize your engagement in a variety of activities such as academic and professional conferences, campus activities and professional development.  
  • Parenting in Graduate School - A Panel Discussion: Graduate students who are parents discuss navigating competing priorities of academic work and family life. Panellists share their own journeys, provide examples of how they’ve navigated graduate school while parenting, and add in a few tips, tricks and ideas for gracefully managing the joys of being a caregiver while tackling academic life!

  • What is Predatory Publishing? How to Select a Journal and Avoid Bad PublishersUnderstand what makes a journal predatory, get tips and tricks to identify quality vs predatory journals, and know who to reach out to when you need guidance.
  • Getting Survey and Statistical Consultation: Learn about survey best practices and how the Statistical Consulting and Survey Research Unit (SCSRU) can support you.
  • Research Ethics Workshop: Join experts from the Office of Research to learn about preparing a research ethics application. This workshop goes through examples of research ethics applications, shares tips and tricks for organizing an application, discusses common pitfalls, and gives you a chance to speak one-on-one with the Office of Research team members.
  • Top Technical Resources for Grad Students: Campus IT experts share information about essential IT resources for your computing needs, technical best practices when working with University data, faculty-specific supports, and thesis formatting tools and templates.
